This weekend we played Ruse
and Bruise by Lutz Stepponate. I had
played this game once before the Midsouth Con 25 but did not pay real attention
to the game nor the rules. I just played
to play.
I have to say I enjoyed this quick, beautifully illustrated,
fun packed card game.
Ruse
and Bruise is a multiple auction / bidding game where you have a set of Victory
Cards in different categories. Each
player has a set of 25 character influence cards in his color and on his turn
lays the card face down in a category to try to gain the highest influence and
win the category for that round. The face down card is revealed as soon as another
card is played under it in the same column. Most character cards have special
effects that influence game play and many cards immediately produce an effect
when revealed.
With the never knowing aspect of the game it is wise to “know”
the effect of each card. When we played I
sometimes got the cards special ability mixed up and had to often refer to the
rules. I think this could be alleviated
by placing player’s guides with each card and ability printed on a little
handout.
Over all I think this is a fast and enjoyable little pick up
game that any one can play.
